“The Princess Bride” became an instant family favorite the moment I brought it home from the Video Castle rental store in 1987. Since then, it has become one of our cherished “Family Stories.”
In his 1973 novel, William Goldman managed to craft the nearly perfect tale: a love story read by a doting grandfather to his grandson, seamlessly interwoven with mystery, intrigue, danger, devotion, and even sword fights.
The object of Westley’s affection was Buttercup, the farmer’s daughter. She delighted in giving the “Farm Boy” endless chores, which he loyally performed with a consistent, gentle response: “As you wish.”
Eventually, they both realize those three words, coupled with his devoted action, truly meant “I love you.” While many speak of love easily, Westley felt he had to prove his dedication through sacrifice.
We have shared this classic story with countless children at Shiloh. In fact, we’ve worn out several VHS tapes and DVDs over the years doing so! But there is a far more romantic and timeless tale we share—one that predates Westley and Buttercup by two thousand years.
It, too, is interwoven with mystery, intrigue, danger, devotion and even swords. It is the true story of a Carpenter’s Son pursuing His Bride.
Denice and I have recounted this—the grandest Love Story—with every child who came through our doors. It is the ultimate classic, and we have worn out a couple of Bibles sharing it.
Shiloh homeparents continue to share Christ’s story with children only because you have coupled your love with devoted action. Your prayers and financial support allow this generation of children to find the love of Jesus Christ and make it their own “Family Story.”

Cherish the Day, Kevin Blew
